Q: Does it have to be staked in ground

no - the unit stands on its own. my 15 year old son uses this all the time and has never used stakes

Q: I’m looking for something that can be used indoors in a gym. Does this product rely on stakes in the ground to hold it up?

It will stand up without the stakes but if a baseball or football is thrown at full speed it will fall over. If it is kids using it, probably ok. It’s pretty well made. Sits outside in our yard and has held up well.
