Based on my SWR and power meter, the radio I received generated maximum powers between 4.2 to 6.9 (depending on frequencies) with average output of 6.1 watts in the common operating frequency in UHF and VHF. It is better than your UV-5R (max power between 3.5 and 5.21 watts, average 4.1 watts) but not by much. My Luiton 8 watts radio BF-F9HP generates max power between 6.65 to 7.810 power, average of 7.3 watts.This HT-UV8R radio is solidly built like all other Baofeng type radio. It can be easily programmed via CHIRP under the category BF-F8HP which translate that you can use the CHIRP programming for this radio with the new Baofeng BF-F8HP interchangeably between most of the 8 watts Boafeng-type radios.Although this radio did not perform at 8 watts, I still gave it a four stars for its baseline built, better power peformance than the average UV-5R, and pricing at less than < $30 which is about the same price as a UV-5R. If you are going to pay for a UV-5R, you may consider this radio since it does seem to have higher power, and is compatible in programming with FB-F8HP if you already have or planning to have a BF-F8HP.

It's a good radio. Just make sure before buy it that it will scan the frequencies that you want it to scan. Don't be deceived by the 15 or 18 Watts.. it's a small radio

I love this small radio . Very easy to use and the battery lasts manny hours .

A good, solid choice for a portable unit. I really like my battery life and the charger. You will probably want to program it.

This is a rebranded radio which seems to be of the same quantity. Says that it comes with charger but it is for China. Talking with customer services they advise buying a foreign adapter. Not very environmentally friendly. Better to buy the real thing.
