Solid, Sleek & Sharp!

This Schrade SCH111 karambit knife is machined out of a solid block / piece of 9Cr18MoV steel. A little bit of research on 9Cr18MoV produces the following description (from https://steelwillknives.com): "High carbon chromium bearing steel that is corrosion resistant. It is steel that is known to keep its cutting edge and has good corrosion resistance. Blades made from this grade of steel are also easy to sharpen. 9Cr18MoV is one of the most popular knife steels in the world and is a great value in terms of price and quality."Wikipedia.com's description: "9Cr13MoVCo, 9Cr14MoV. Chinese made steels that are similar to 440 but with a higher carbon, cobalt and vanadium content to add more strength to the blade. Uses include high end barber scissors, hunting knives etc."The knife is accompanied by a molded thermoplastic sheath. Although Amazon's description is that it is a "belt/neck sheath," it really does not have any kind of integrated clip or mechanism for easy attachment to a belt. The sheath does have holes through which you can attach the included black cord for use on one's neck. The knife "clicks" in securely to the sheath. Personally, I think the design of the sheath is somewhat ungainly, and wish that the manufacturer would have spent more time to design a workable sheath that was not so "CLUNKY" looking. As for the blade itself, that's where you get the PIZAZZ & the VALUE! As previously mentioned, the blade is machined out of a solid block / piece of the 9Cr18MoV steel. It's simple, ELEGANT & VERY SLEEK. The blade's cutting edge has been GROUND into a tapered & very sharp edge.I wholeheartedly agree with some other purchasers / reviewers in their view that it would be very difficult to find a better value for a knife that's available for less than $20. It was $18.16 through Amazon Prime at the time of my purchase.

It effortlessly passes all of the paper cutting tests folks like to run

Read this.My knife was as sharp as a razor right out of the box. It effortlessly passes all of the paper cutting tests folks like to run. And it will shave the hair off your arm as well as a barber’s razor! Maybe company representative heard complaints about the knives shipping in dull condition and decided to make improvements.A few folks don’t like the sheath, but I find it to be more than serviceable. And, if you have large hands, you may find the handle a bit small. The handle is perfect for me.The blade is made of 9Cr14MoV--which is a good serviceable steel. I realize that some will disagree. There are people who only want blades that are U.S. made. From my perspective, this Schrade kerambit is a low cost, high value knife. Although most people now think of a karambit as a self-defense blade, karambits were originally meant to be utility knives. They serve that purpose very well even today. You can use this knife to open a box, sharpen a pencil, or trim a hanging vine on your front porch-- the sort of everyday jobs that we all deal with.In an emergency, you can create fuzz sticks for fire starting, or cut the seatbelt of a person trapped in a car. For most of us, the most unlikely use will be self defense; however, in the event of a life threatening attack, this knife could do horrific damage to an attacker. This particular Karambit isn’t as sharply curved as many contemporary models. And for those who want a blade a bit more suited for stabbing, this design will be pleasing. In sum, it is an excellent knife at an excellent price.

bang for your buck

I tend to spend way more than I should on items like these chasing after the absolute highest quality. On paper there's technically nothing wrong with the spec or design of this one, especially at the price point, so before pulling the trigger on a nearly $300 similar blade with a more preferable steel and a better sheath, I figured I'd give this Schrade a go.The paracord that came in the box I believe was designed for pack mounting the sheath somewhere, but I opted to go for a grip upgrade instead using the existing holes in the frame and a tight wrap, however at that point it would not seat properly in the sheath any more. Few minutes with a dremel and I cut in a relief for my new grip cord that did not impact the built in retention. The provided sheath is pretty blocky, so I also smoothed out the top corners to allow my hand to fall into a comfortable grip more easily, and milled in a finger groove so my offhand can have a better purchase on the sheath if necessary.I will probably be attaching some sort of belt clip opposed to using it as a neck knife though.

Excellent quality knife for the price. High carbon steel blade and generous extras.

I love this Schrade 111 Karambit Neck Knife, designed by Joshua Waggoner. It's an incredible value, rivaling the $120 Max Venom DMaX for under $20. It's not only made from quality high carbon steel, it comes in a gift box with sheath, neck chain and 5 feet of nylon ripcord - just enough to wrap the handle. The knife fits my extra large hand well for a reverse-grip, Pikal style. I needed, however, to grind down about 3/8" of the rear of the blade edge for safety and comfort. It's a great EDC, but won't be a legal carry in locations like L.A. and Boston, where the restriction is 2.5". I like it so much, however, I'm considering grinding down a whole half inch and wrapping it, so it is legal. That would mean needing a special sheath. I'd never be caught dead wearing a neck knife, anyways - what a bad self defense idea - carry a knife where it's easy to take away and everyone can see what you're packing, duh. So a special waistband rig is in order.
