Great Western Washington Tale
The story of Salty Dog involves his riding the ferry back and forth to a boat yard, so it is very appropriate for kids who get to ride the ferry occasionally or often, as many Washington state kids do. Most kids love dogs, too, so any dog story is well received. I was very familiar with this book as I read it to students while employed as an elementary school librarian. I am retired now, but wanted my grandchildren to have it.

Great Book for Young Readers
I wish recent books were as good as this. Good story, great pictures and you learn something too. I have purchased 2 other Salty Dog books since reading this one. My grandson, 10, enjoys them.

Really cute book. Nice story and great illustrations. We have many books illustrated by Ted Rand and they are among the favorites for the grand kids.

Salty is one adventurous dog!
We took this book out of the library and my children, ages 7 and 4, loved it so much that I purchased an out-of-print hardbound copy from an Amazon bookseller so we could have a more durable, permanent copy. It is one of those books that I intend to keep past their childhood, like my mom did with me and my sibs, because it is so unusual and cute.I am not all that familiar with the first Salty Dog book wherin the characters are established, but is doesn't matter if one is acquainted with them in order to enjoy the book. In this adventure, Salty and Zack, his cute owner, sail on up to Alaska to sit tight until the winter weather is better and they can head on to warmer waters. This is the story of how Salty adjusts, comes to love hanging out the ferry crew on an Alaska ferry, and has an adventure that is based on a true story that the Rands heard about a dog who falls from an airplane in flight, lands in soft snow, and is happily reunited with his master the next day.The text is easy to follow, but not simplistic. It is a great picture book for both my children, even given their different ages. The beautiful illustrations capture the excitement of the Alaskan wilderness.A real keeper!
