Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and is a herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The provenance of our product is Northern India and, like all our products, is 100% traceable to source. Known primarily for its use in many Asian dishes imparting a mustard-like earthy flavour, turmeric has also been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat indigestion, throat infections, common colds, liver ailments and even used topically to cleanse wounds or treat skin conditions. Now modern science is increasingly showing that a polyphenol called curcumin (diferuloylmethane), turmeric's active constituent, is a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to help the body fight free radicals, which hinders tissue degeneration and inhibits pro-inflammatory molecules. Extensive clinical trials have addressed the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy in humans. So Why Black Pepper? On its own the beneficial elements of turmeric are not easily absorbed. About 5% of black pepper by weight is comprised of a compound called piperine. One of the ways our liver processes turmeric is by making it water soluble so it can be more easily excreted. Piperine molecules inhibits that process and consequently curcumin's bioavailability shoots up a massive 2000%. Even just a little pinch of pepper, 1/20th of a teaspoon, can significantly boost levels of curcumin in the blood.
