Night Gallery Season Three Displayed on Blu-Ray
Kino Lorber Studio Classics releases on Blu-ray the third and final season of "Night Gallery", which was shortened from an hour to a half-hour, featuring 15 episodes that all look their best in HD, a good upgrade from the 2012 DVD set and the complete series set from 2017, which includes audio commentaries on all episodes, most having two, provided by the same participants as the first two seasons, and also the third and concluding featurette about the "Syndication Conundrum" of season 3 that focuses mostly on how episodes of the contemporaries' series "The Sixth Sense" was shortened and reintegrated as episodes of the Night Gallery, when in reality there was no connection at all, including all of Rod Serling's newly filmed intros, as that series is still not available in region one.Episodes are of varying quality, ranging from the excellent ('The Other Way Out') to the dreadful ('She'll Be Company for You') Though Rod Serling famously disliked it, this series is mostly enjoyable, and well worth owning for fans. Give it a chance.

Season 3 is here!!!
For those of us who are fans of the Serling's series "Night Gallery" we could not be more thrilled at the news that the third, and final, season is finally being released. We waited forever for the first season to ever be released. That occurred in 2004. Then we waited it seemed a life time for the second season to be released in 2008. It then seemed like an eternity before the word came out in 2012 the third season was coming out. The final season of "Night Gallery" is not the best, especially compaired to the second season but there are still some excellant episodes with a few big named actors appearing in what was probably the last of the great anthology series that use to be found on television. The sadness to all this was that NBC decided to cut the series down to only a half hour show and then cancelled it halfway throught the '72-'73 television season. The executives at NBC I guess didn't have a clue just how great NG was and probably couldn't comprehend the genius of Rod Serling who is and will always be to me the greatest writer for televison. There were 15 episodes during the last season of NG. Among the better stories I think are THE RETURN OF THE SORCERER starring Vincent Price and Bill Bixby, SPECTRE IN TAP-SHOES starring Sandra Dee, YOU CAN COME UP NOW, MRS. MILLIKAN starring Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, THE OTHER WAY OUT with Ross Martin and Burl Ives and FINNEGAN'S FLIGHT with Burgess Meredith. Some of the other big name actors that appeared in the third season include Mickey Rooney, Leonard Nimoy, Chuck Connors, Dean Stockwell and Sally Field. Also included is the missing story from the second season that was missing from the season 2 DVD set. It has been a true concern from "Night Gallery" fans far and wide if WITCHES' FEAST would be found and added to the season three set. Well it is official. It has!!! It has been added with three other episodes to create a "lost Episode".

The final season.....
Although often unfavourably compared to Rod Serling's 'The Twilight Zone' I feel that 'Night Gallery' should be judged on it's own merits. While the first 2 seasons had tales with variable running times, this final season, which was originally broadcast in 1972/73 has a more settled 25-minute story format, (with just a couple of short vignettes) with the stories being of variable quality. The horror elements are often psychological, while sometimes achieving an effective level of creepiness. Occasionally the stories are a little offbeat with a slight tongue in-cheek feel. In spite of the relatively short running times, some of these anthology style tales unravel at a relaxed pace, and are well directed with some good performances. While stylistically very much of their time, some of the scripts are intelligent. The standouts for me include 'Rare Objects' in which a threatened hoodlum (played by Mickey Rooney) is desperate to find sanctuary - but at what cost?. 'Finnegan's Flight' sees stir-crazy prison lifer, Charlie Finnegan (Burgess Meredith) placed under hypnosis, the power of suggestion leads to a sequence of bizarre and unsettling incidents. As I've already mentioned, the quality of the stories does vary (with season 2 remaining my favourite overall) but on the whole I feel this final season is worthy of 4 stars. The Technicolor prints used for this release are generally very good. With English subtitles. After an unsuccessful attempt to play this Region 1 release on a Region 2 player I can confirm that a multi region or R1 player will be required. The extras include the 'lost episode' which includes the tales/short vignettes - DIE NOW, PAY LATER. ROOM FOR ONE LESS. LITTLE GIRL LOST and the missing instalment from season 2 - WITCHES' FEAST.An audio commentary on the episode 'Return of The Sorcerer' is provided by Night Gallery historians Scott Skelton and Jim Benson. The inside of the DVD case features an episode synopsis which I have included below....*RETURN OF THE SORCERER....A translator must read between the lines when a troubled sorcerer hires him to solve the enigma of a strange Arabic text.Starring Vincent Price, Bill Bixby and Tisha Sterling.*THE GIRL WITH THE HUNGRY EYES....A photographer discovers that true beauty masks a sinister secret when he disregards his gorgeous model's warning and follows her after a photo shoot.Starring James Farentino, John Astin and Joanna Pettet.*RARE OBJECTS....A racketeer in hiding faces a difficult choice when he must decide if he's willing to pay the ultimate price for safety.Starring Mickey Rooney, Raymond Massey and Fay Spain.*SPECTRE IN TAP-SHOES....An antique dealer returns home to find her twin's dead body, but the deceased sibling refuses to rest in peace when the living one tries to sell their mutual home.Starring Sandra Dee, Dane Clark and Christopher Connelly.*YOU CAN COME UP NOW, MRS. The Best Of 70s TV
As much as I like The Twilight Zone, I was always more a fan of The Night Gallery for its horror and supernatural leanings - not to mention all the gaudy early 70s sights and sounds. It used to be shown late at night in my region when I was a teenager, so it's good to finally be able to own the show and to get to see some of the episodes that I missed first time around.

TWO DISKS ONLY
Love the series BUT FELT CHEATED ON THE COST. Not really value for money but we all need to have the set complete. Just wish they did try to rip us off at the end by making it same cost as the other box sets.
