Q: Is it normal for the screen to have dark vertical lines? It appears that text scrolls underneath interspersed dark lines so letters are not solid.

I have not experienced that problem in the two units that I have used. I would suggest that you check the battery, and if a new battery does not help, your unit may be defective. Dan
