Screw Lengths
Don't quite get it. Our flue is 16 3/4" x 16 3/4" and the screws that come with it are no where near long enough that come with the 18" x 18" cover. Fits fine otherwise, but one cannot screw it tight with the screws that came with it. Just have to hope a strong wind doesn't blow it away. The internal mesh pointing towards the flue helps in that regard, otherwise, it wouldn't work at all. What were they thinking? Hopefully I can get longer screws and then it should be better.

Works and looks good
Looks good. Paint and welds look to be durable. Time will tell. Super easy to install and it comes with 4 long screws in case you need them.

Installation was very easy.
Nothing not to like. Good price, fast shipping and easy installation. I put it up mainly to keep birds coming down the chimney flue and making nests since the weather won't require fires in the wood stove soon.

Excellent unit, designed well, price is right.
I am very happy with this product. It arrived timely. It is well made and will probably last forever. I bought the black, 9 x 18 (see pictures). The packaged arrived well insulated from damage, and did arrive in perfect condition, with screws included. The install-there is an inside border of mesh that can rest on the top surface of the flue, but I felt that it did not allow enough material for the screws to grab without possibly causing the flue casting to crack or break, let alone possible issues with wind causing it to work itself loose over time. I decided that I would rather have it seat all the way down the extended part of the flue so that I could utilize the friction created by bending back the mesh, and then anchoring securely with the screws. After a couple of trial and errors with bending the internal mesh, then gently tapping the cover into place until it bottomed out on the outer part of the chimney, it finally seated nicely. This made the fit very snug and exactly what I was looking for. After that, secured the screws all around, perfect. I looked around while on the roof. I am the only one in the neighborhood with a chimney cover.

A Raccoon's Thoughts....
Good chimney cap, after installation I found a note the next day taped to the bottom of my front door, it read as follows..."Dear BenWhen we got home this morning we couldn't get past your chimney cap and we fear for the safety of our baby. You must hear here calling for us at the bottom of your chimney, by the fireplace door. Would you mind retrieving our kit and place him in the backyard by the deck so we can reconnect and relocate to a more appropriate home? Please and Thanks. And by the way we really enjoyed the music we heard while we were living in your house.Yours truly Rocky and Mrs. Rocky Raccoon.P.S. Do you think you could unlock your garbage can for us or maybe leave out a tin or two of cat food, love ya....."Now this note seemed strange enough but what I really had a hard time believing was that a raccoon was able to find scotch tape to stick the note to the door. Wow, they really are crafty.Anyway I reunited the cuties and they are all fine. It's a beautiful day.

Will Probably Outlive Me - We'll See
In the past we have had a problem with raccoons nesting. I scared them out with a loud radio left in the fireplace. Our chimney has three flues (2 fireplaces and 1 gas water heater). The caps seem to be nicely made from stainless steel. The metal edges are sharp, so use gloves. It's a good DIY project if you can safely get on the roof and your roof is not dangerously steep. The installation went smoothly, with no need to overtighten, they feel securely attached and will hopefully keep out the animals and rain.

Easy to install
I bought 2 caps the 9 x9 and 13 x 9. On the 9 x9, the inside corners have a steel insert. This insert presses on the tile and creates a tight fit. Then when the screw is tightened, the force from the screw is spread out on the insert and giving a secure fit. I have confidence this cap will not come off. On the 13 by 9 cap, the cap did not have the steel insert and the cap is held on at the corners with the screws snug against the tile. I worry a bit about the tile breaking because the force is concentrated at the corner. So I gave this cap 4 starsIn both cases the spot welds on the lid came through, just small heat spots, but to avoid rust on these spots I will dab some paint.

Nice quality unit but doesn't stop the rain
Great quality unit, went on extremely easy however it still doesn't do very well when its windy and raining. The rain just travels sideways and gets inside through the mess and drains down the chimney and into my basement. I think I'll have to change my chimney top out with one of those newer style ones that look like 3 cones fitting together to look like one cone sorta...

This product is not fit for purpose
This product is sold as a cap to install over your chimney flue. The description says "Using slotted hex-head bolts, the unique corner mounting attachment design of a shelterpro chimney Cover provides the securest possible fit to a masonry flue tile". In fact, the vertical clearance from the metal flange which seats the cap on the top edge of the flue tile, to the bolt which you screw into the outside of the tile is less than 1/4" ! (see photo of ruler resting on flange beside bolt tip inside cap.) This does not provide a secure fit. I would expect the bolt to work loose in high winds and there is nothing else holding the cap in place on the chimney. The manufacturers instructions in the box clearly state that less than 3/4" of tile "will not allow the corner screws to engage securely". They seem oblivious to the physical dimensions of the product, which allow no more than 1/4" of tile above the screw.
