Good for gift giving and for prepping
I wouldn't call myself a doomsday prepper, but I like to have things on hand. I live about 3.5 hours away from the nearest Wal-Mart/Sams combo and while we do have a very good grocery store here in town, it is small and prone to run out of things. And when the tourists are in town, well, all of the businesses run out of everything!I got this for some ideas for mixes to have on hand. Brownie mixes, muffin mixes, spice mixes are all things that we use every day, but I can't necessarily run to the store for. We tend to try to make do with what we have on hand here. There isn't a lot of running into town. There are some good recipes in this book. Like any recipe book, I don't think I'd use every one of her mix ideas, but there are enough in here to make it worth the money. And if you are buying it for gift ideas? Well, then you've got it all right here. If you live in a town and can get all of these ingredients, lucky you! Gift jars and gift basket ideas abound. Go for it!

Valuable book full of easy to make basics.
This book is reminiscent of my mother's old-fashioned Make-a-Mix book, but brought into the modern era. The authors wrote in straight forward/easy to understand way and liberally spread tips throughout book. There are some handy charts in the back as well. What I liked about this book is that it contains basic mixes/recipes that would please almost any household and can be changed up a bit to suit your tastes. There is nothing exotic or gourmet, just good old fashioned food and condiments. Also, the ingredients are stuff you would normally have on hand, so there's no running to the store for odds and ends. Each recipe includes shelf life...very handy and not always included in books of this type. Another bonus is that ingredients are listed in both imperial and metric, making it easier to half or double if you need to. That said, the batch for most recipes make enough to be reasonably used within its shelf-life, unlike some books I've seen that make enough for an army! Good reference to have on hand. Someone who uses the original Make-a-Mix regularly won't find as much value in this book, but it's great for someone new to the idea or those just looking for simple ways to reduce food costs and/or processed foods from their diet.

Reprint needed
This is a great old book. It would be worth at least an ebook reprint! Many helpful hints in it!

I like this book a lot
I'll tell you, there are a lot of recipes in here I've been looking for. Things like baking mixes, how to make condiments and soup bases etc from healthy ingredients. In the endeavor to eat healthier, there are often things that I would like to make to replace some of the processed things that I can't always find organic healthy replacements for. The main chapters break down like this: Let's Get Started; Call to Breakfast; Baking Mixes; Pantry & Refrigerator Staple Mixes; Main Meal Mixes & Healthy Snacks; Soup & Bean Mixes; Rice & Pasta Mixes; Cooking Sauces & Syrups; Barbecue Sauces & Rubs; Salad Dressings & Dips; Seasonings and Stuffing Mixes; The Beverage Bar; Dried Foods & Jerky; Gift Ideas for Your Mixes. My go to recipes in this book is for BBQ sauce and Thousand Island Dressing. Easy and quick to make and much better ingredients. I need to try some others and explore more. I really do like this book.

Good and healthy!
After purchasing the "Make-a-Mix" book by Karine Eliason, I was looking for a way to make the recipes more healthy and bought this book. It is pretty good, but the organization is not as easy as the MAM book. I have now made seven of the mixes from this one and they were all fine and I appreciate the health angle, but MAM remains my go-to book for mix making (I've made over two dozen of those recipes). Both books feature easy to follow directions without any crazy out-of-the-ordinary ingredients. I highly recommend MAM-style books to avoid artificial flavorings, colorings, and weird additives in your food that you would get with ordinary boxed, off-the-shelf mixes. Plus, making several meals' worth of mixes at once does actually save time and that was another goal of mine with these books... I started making a couple mixes each weekend, and after a month or so have developed a pretty impressive pantry.

Quick Fix? or Two Recipes?
I like this book. It's full of helpful hints for organizing your kitchen and cooking for family.Yet I was under the impression when I purchased it that it would be filled with recipes I could make ahead of time, then use some smaller portion of for individual recipes. But most individual recipes call for a "master mix" (which could be made ahead) and the entire master mix goes into that recipe.I give the authors credit for helping us make healthier food by choosing what goes into the meals we eat and allowing us to prepare them more economically than prepared food.Yet most of the recipes are simply a two-stage recipe, one involving the master mix, the other whatever is to be added to the first to complete the dish.To be fair, there is a line that says most recipes may be doubled or tripled for convenience. The book is full of tasty-sounding foods, many of which I plan to try out. Yet I am somewhat disappointed it's not providing me with a master mix of a quantity I can make several batches of the ultimate recipe from.

Awesome way to save & prep
First let me say that I have many books, but this book has starters for every fruit, vegetable and staple to oil and vinegar you can imagine. You will be able to create your own favorites even though this book offers 225 recipes. Casey Kellar has done an incredible job of putting these together. This book gets right to it with loads of recipes and you can alter them for those of you who are preppers for long-term storage of food too! This is not a read book, it is a direct recipe collection book for preparing meals in a jar, or condiments or herbal seasonings, marinates, dips, dressings and all ahead. You will save money! Another item you may love to accompany this book is a FoodSaver and FoodSaver Jar Sealer. Having them will aid you in storing foods for a very long time.
