Great book, except for the brain disease thing and the 12-step recommendation. Expert? Almost.

Overall this is an excellent workbook for addiction recovery. It contains lots of useful advice and solid exercises to put the advice into practice. The reason I didn't give it five stars is because of two things that I consider errors. First, my understanding is that substance addiction is a psychological disorder, not a brain disease. "Brain disease" is not a diagnostic category that I have ever heard of, unless you're talking about a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer's or a cross-cultural mental illness like schizophrenia. It's important not to confuse addiction with mental illness or physical diseases. There is no substantive difference between a substance addiction and a gambling addiction or a food addiction or any other kind of addiction. Just because something affects your behavior, and probably your brain, permanently does not make it a disease. The second error is to say that twelve-step programs are compatible with cognitive behavioral therapy. Having been through a 12 step program, I can firmly say that it is mutually exclusive with a scientific, rational program. Twelve-step programs are highly religious and moralistic in nature and do very little to plan for relapse prevention. Depending on who your sponsor is, calling a sponsor can be useful or completely useless. While it is possible to go to AA meetings without doing the 12 steps, that is the exception rather than the norm. There are not many sponsors who would be willing to take on someone who refuses to believe in a higher power of any sort and refuses to "work the steps". When sober people in AA commit suicide, all you hear is "the Disease got them".

You could probably get the same material in a friendlier to use format by going through SMART recovery.

Puts most of the stuff you learned in school into a format that's not 12 step. You could probably get the same material in a friendlier to use format by going through SMART recovery.

Info on the book cover is misleading

Book cover is supposed to display key information of the book, yet this one only said “addiction" and it's not until I received the book that I found it is about addiction to substance abuse which certainly is not what I need. If the bookcover made this clear I would not place the order.

As an addictions therapist the book serves as a manual for a structured treatment program for various forms of addiction. It is well researched and written by practitioners.

Bought this for a family member who is adamant his mental health has nothing to do with alcoholism. It was a pricey gamble but has actually made a huge difference to the way he thinks and has really helped! 100% worth the money, thank you.
